Basant Sahu has been awarded many big honors for his talent so far. Former Governor of Chhattisgarh KM Seth has been honored by many organizations and institutions including Cultural Gem, National Folk Art Festival of Lucknow, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment of Delhi, Dau Ramchandra Deshmukh Memorial Majority Award, Saurabh Kala Samman, Pandit Shambhunath Mishra Shikhar Samman Are. He has exhibited his photographs at many important places.
One should not curse anyone for his condition but should move forward with full confidence, then one day success will surely come. The story of Basant Sahu, who lives in Kurud village of Dhamtari district, is similar. He did not lose courage when 95 percent of his body was not working. Today, he is not only a well-known painter of Chhattisgarh, but he has got his artwork ironed across the country. Basant Sahu, 50, has been wheelchair-bound for the past 27 years. On 15 September 1995, he suffered a spinal cord injury in a road accident, due to which his entire body was affected. The doctors said that 95 percent of the body is not working. After which he remained bedridden for months. For about two years, he was in a position to sit on a chair with support. During this, he used to look at the pictures on the walls while lying on the bed. It was from here that I got the idea to make pictures of them. After this, he made many types of pictures on blank paper one after the other.
Before the accident, he used to work as a motor mechanic. Have made more than twelve hundred paintings: After the accident, when he thought of making a painting, initially he had to face a lot of difficulties. When he picked up the pencil, the pencil was not staying in his hand. Tried several times but didn’t wake up.
Finally thought of tying a bandage in his hand and trapping it in it. Gradually succeeded and made a sketch of Mahatma Gandhi for the first time. He hasn’t stopped since then. Till now he has made more than twelve hundred paintings. He says that when he tries to raise his hand to paint on the canvas, he feels a lot of pain. They can only raise their hands for a few moments. In these moments, the lines that descend on the canvas, the colors that emerge together make pictures of life.
The pictures made by him are very beautiful and seem to explain the new colors of life. Poignant depiction of tribal folk culture and civilization is seen in his artwork. Beautiful depictions of Lord Krishna’s pastimes can also be seen in Basant Sahu’s paintings. Paintings are made by tying a strap in the hand and a brush in the strap: Basant ties a strap to his right hand to make a picture. Someone gets stuck in this belt with a brush.
